 Meet Miss Babs

THE story

For those bestowed with a longer memory, you will recall Acorn Antiques – the hugely popular Victoria Wood television programme of mid-eighties fame, which was later reborn into a hit musical in 2005…

On meeting a new friend (a one, Mr Elton John) back in the aforementioned ‘decade of decadence’ and on his learning that I was an antiques dealer, he bequeathed me with the nickname Miss Babs – the notorious character who ran Acorn Antiques in the show, played by the wonderful Celia Imrie. Despite my moving on to forge a career in the events industry, a piece of my Babs persona firmly remained.

The point being, I never lost my interest in antique furniture, Lighting & unusual items and moreover I did not stop buying and collecting them ! And so, as I celebrate twenty years of Alasdair Brown Events, it feels like the right time to emancipate and share my unique finds.

And so, I am delighted to announce I am putting a collection up for sale, under my, err, vintage moniker.

And with that, I cordially welcome you to Miss Babs Collection!

The curator

I have been in the seriously joyful business of creating parties and producing events and installations since 1999. My background in antiques honed my eye and attention for detail, which has informed my events work in many different and unique ways.

My fascination with craftsmanship and detail has developed an innate knowledge across decades and eras which translates into knowing what does and does not work in instances where my clients want something specifically evocative or eclectic – whether for an event or for a design project. I relish in the search for the ‘perfect complement’ as much as I delight in delivering a ‘damn good’ party.

I have drawn upon my private collection of antiques and finds to both dramatic and joy-inducing effect in much of my events work. Conversely, observing what groups of revellers respond to at events, has informed my eye for what I search for and collect.

Nothing excites me more than sharing the wealth of my treasures and imagination.
